Mikaela Shiffrin Is Now The G.O.A.T’ist Skier of All Time!
It’s official. Mikaela Shiffrin is now the goat’est skier in history. Saturday’s slalom win on Saturday, broke Ingemar Stenmark’s all time record for World Cup victories.
His 86 victories stood atop the mountain for 34 years before Shiffrin’s 87th win, 12 years to the day after her very first, and two days shy of her 28th birthday.
And while Ingemar’s run was legendary and dominate, his last victory came at the tail end of his storied career. Shiffrin has never been more in her prime than she has this season. 13 victories across 3 disciplines. Already locking up the season overall title, as well as the slalom and giant slalom globes with more races still ahead this weekend. She has five overall World Cup titles, 3 Olympic Medals, and 14 World Championship Medals. (Ingemar had 3, 3, and 7 to his credit).
On top of being the most dominant alpine athlete we’ve ever seen she’s pretty freaking cool. She’s personable, engaging, funny, and has a gold winning smile. She takes skiing seriously, but not herself. She loves Taylor Swift and her boyfriend Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who happens to be the most dominant men’s downhiller on the planet. No scandals, no drama. She’s overcome the loss of her best friend and coach, her dad. She’s overcome an abysmal performance at the Olympics that would have broken many for good. Mikaela Shiffrin is someone we want to root for and should. Because this type of greatness is rare, and honestly might not be seen again. So congratulations and thank you Mikaela. You are the G.O.A.T’ist skier of all time!
