Big Stick Energy – E31 – What is Mountain Culture? – Nahanni McKay

Tori Anderson & Renee McCurdy May 23, 2022 197

Background

Nahanni McKay is a Metis-Cree artist and photographer based on Treaty 7 Territory in Alberta, Canada. Born and raised in Banff, her art and photography highlight the human impacts on surrounding natural environments, the growing need to coexist with wildlife and the value in the decolonization of land.

In Part 1 of this interview we dive into what mountain culture is, or isn’t, and how this is actually quite hard to define. We dive into tokenism and how Nahanni has experienced this recently as someone who has grown up in and around the ski industry. Activism is tough work and we can all do our part in small ways to work at decolonizing the outdoors.

Stay tuned for some hot goss and tea coming in Part 2 next week 😉
