Welcome back to pod recaps on the Out of Collective! This week we’re taking a look at the most recent episode of Out Of Bounds. Adam takes a look behind the lens, talking about all things photography with Peter Cirilli. Before we dive in, quick shouts to this episodes sponsors, Darn Tough Socks in Vermont. They make the best darn socks for pretty much darn near everything, period. And also big thanks to Sierra Nevada, check out their new powder day IPA. Now, let’s get into it!
Peter Cirilli is a freelance photographer based in Burlington, Vermont. Like many people starting out, he didn’t know what he was doing. He was just taking pictures in high school and had an eye for art. He would shoot skateboarding, and then snowboarding in the winter. Even following around his homies on the high school basketball team taking photos. Peter just knew the more pics he took, the better he would get. A chance to skip high school to go see Line Traveling Circus at Ski Sundown was also a huge turning point. He followed around skiers and riders and just kept asking questions. He could see there was a whole world out there that he wanted to be a part of. The next stop was Champlain College, keeping him close’ish to home, and around the mountains in winter to document skiing and snowboarding.
These days, Peter is out there doing it. Living his dream, shooting and filming with photographers and athletes he’s always looked up to. Hell, he’s even friends with most of them now. How cool is that? But, also how did he make it work? And how does he make this a career and not just a passion? How do you transform what you love to pay the bills? Unfortunately, there’s no fun answer or hidden secret. It was serious work. Taking gigs that pay little or nothing at all. Sleeping on floors. Prioritizing trips and opportunities over other things. Serious self-analysis and being his own toughest critic. But, one of the best parts of photography is that it is so subjective. So, if something doesn’t work, you just try again. Also, being comfortable with being uncomfortable, and that applies to way more than photography.
The want and the drive outweigh the reasoning. It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else. The lessons Peter teaches us can apply to almost all of us. Try new things. Go to new places. Work Hard. Look at things differently. Know your worth. And it’s not just commercial photography that’s for life. Peter lives it, and you can feel his passion and see his passion in his work. Check him out on Instagram @Cirilliphoto and give a full listen below. Don’t forget to give us a review wherever you listen to this and all Out Of Collective podcasts and we’ll see ya next time!
