Emily Sullivan

Emily is a backcountry skier based in Alaska. She also happens to be captain of the Voile ambassador team and on the board of directors for Alaska Avalanche School. In addition, she’s a climate activist, writer, photographer, and spends her summers pack rafting, and trail running. If all that sounds pretty bad-ass, it is, and she is. She’s the full package and not just a rad skier. And that helped her get the position as captain with Voile. And as captain, she’s pushing for more inclusion on the team for women and people of color. Community starts with an invitation.

She’s only 33, but she didn’t start skiing until she was 26. But she had plenty of mountain experience, guiding on Denali for more than 10 years. She just didn’t know how to ski. She had some helpful mentors but also put in a lot of solo work. Not only did her determination to learn a new skill help her crush it in the mountains, she also credits back country touring with helping her mental health.

Emily had the mountain knowledge from guiding, and her work with the Alaska Avalanche School, but she needed more reps. So she started doing ski-mo races. She didn’t have the right gear, but she had the right mindset. And laps are laps. She improved quickly and definitely helped transition her skills in the backcountry. If she’s come this far in 6 years, the sky is the limit. Follow her on Instagram @emelex to see what’s next for Emily and enjoy her stunning ski photography while you’re at it. The gorls didn’t touch on the photography much so they might just have to bring her back for part two. Until then listen to this week’s episode below!
