Out of Collective Podcast – E8 – Why Telemark Skiing is a Cult worth joining w/ AJ Cutler Adam X Sauerwein
Hello and welcome. Put out your mug and we’ll fill you up with a fresh cup of Pod Recap from the latest episode of Coffee & Van Chats. This week’s guest is Michael Creed. Our host John Croom seems to think he’s the most interesting team director out there in cycling today. Let’s get into it and find out why!
Cycling is a sport where you often find a lot of squares. Not much time for anything else. Weighing their food. Really wild stuff. So when a character like Michael Creed comes along, you notice. He brought some levity to the sport and raced at an elite level for a long time. Now his focus is as a U-23 Team director for Aevolo. And while maybe not his original intention, he has found purpose in helping young riders avoid some of the regrets and mistakes in his career.
Taking a step back, he and John talk about his roots in the sport. His father raced and was natural for him to follow down the same path. Wasn’t long until he was racing for the national team and spending time in Europe. And he had fun doing it and shared it on social media in the early days of Twitter.
However these days the U23 team seems to be a little more old school. While the team may not be paid, they are taken care of. Travel, meals, entries even a stipend. How does he find riders? He looks for the hustle of young riders he saw in himself. Following his hunches on who is fit to ride. Ignoring coaches, managers, and parents and focusing on the riders themselves. And you better come correct with a paper resume to be considered.
Most interesting team leader? Not for me to say, but John thinks so and that says a lot. What I do see is a guy who has taken his career and now using his experience to help a younger generation. Probably the best bit of insight or advice I took away from this interview was when Michael said, ” You’ll never win a fight against someone who never stops fighting.” True on a bike and true in life. You can find Michael on Instagram at @michael_laroche_creed and you can find the full listen below! Don’t forget to leave a review and check back next week for Episode 100 of Coffee and Van Chats. Cheers!
