Velocio Riding Duffel and Pack

I’m obsessed with bags. Nice bags. No piece of gear gets me more excited than a well-designed bag. Conversely, a bad bag makes me want to throw my lunch. Luckily my lunch stayed where it belonged with these two new Riding bags from Velocio.

What is Velocio?

Velocio is a cycling clothing and accessories brand that started in 2014. They’ve been known to make comfortable, high-quality cycling bibs, jerseys, gloves, and more. Their gear is worn by some of the best gravel, road, and mountain bike riders on the planet.

The Riding Duffel – $179

A good duffel is hard to define, so we will try. Duffel bags have been the “entryway catch-all” of the bag world for a long time. Got a bunch of stuff? Throw it in and figure it out later. Simple, right? Well, I think the difference between a good and a bad duffel is all about size, durability, and minimalistic storage while retaining the dump bucket effect. Velocio’s Riding series is a great example of a Duffel done correctly. It’s got nice pockets, two carry options, and a space specific for your laundry.

It also can’t be overstated how much I appreciate that the colorways match perfectly between the duffel and the pack. Not enough brands consider silly things like aesthetics when putting out new offerings, but Velocio never misses in that respect.

Beyond the look and the pockets, the nylon shell & waterproof zips make for a great water-resistant bag when things get gross. If you’ve been to a New England gravel race, you know.

The only thing I’d knock points for on this bag – is that I wish they made it in a size bigger. 40L is a very popular duffel size, but I feel that if you’re going to have only one duffel size, it should be a 50, which hardly anyone seems to make. It is $179, but I can’t knock it for that because that’s just where the market is for a beautifully built duffel, of which there are just a handful.

The Riding Pack – $159

As I’ve mentioned, I have a lot of bags, and no category of bag is represented in higher volume than roll-top backpacks. This stands out because making a roll-top seems to be pretty easy, everyone does it, but not everyone does it well.

Just like with the duffel, we can talk all day about the water resistance and how nice that can be in those wet and gross spring days over here on the East Coast, but I think you get that already. The biggest things for me are open space and organization. Just like with the duffel, there’s a ton of 0pen space but not a ton of compartments or separation. For the compartments, they are specific and well-designed. There’s one easy-access front zip pocket for quick essentials like your car keys or paraphernalia of choice, one padded compartment in the back for your laptop, and one mesh inner zip pocket for other small and easy-to-lose items. The rest is just a dump bucket, which can expand up to 35L with the use of the roll-top strap. While I didn’t measure it, it looks much bigger than a 35L when it’s stuffed full.

The one issue with the pack is the laptop zipper being a hair small even though I only have a 15″ laptop, I found myself trying to “couch down an apartment hallway” my computer into it when I was in a hurry. Once it’s in, there’s clearly enough room, but I wonder if an inch extra (on the zipper) would make a difference.

I’m sure that’s not the first time someone has asked for an extra inch.

Overall, a phenomenal bag, and one I’ve transitioned into my daily driver.
