Pod Recap – Coffee And Van Chats – E96 – Kiel Reijnen

On the road again with another episode of Coffee and Van Chats on The Out of Collective. John Croom just drove 22 hours from Colorado to South Carolina for a change of pace. John and his epic helmet tan are back for another episode with another rad guest. This week Jon chats with pro-cyclist Kiel Reijnen. Kiel does more than ride bikes. He’s a sailor, fisherman, father, and all-around adventurer. He and John talk about more about life and less about cycling. So let’s get to know Kiel Reijnen!

Kiel Reijnen

Kiel Reijnen

After a decade and a half as a pro-cyclist on the world tour, he’s gone full privateer. This road brings a whole different set of challenges. But still having to hustle applies to both. This convo is less about pedaling and more about living the bike life, just two dudes who love bikes. We really get to know Kiel, the person behind the athlete. Kiel grew up on an island in the pacific northwest and loves sailing and crabbing, but still calls Washington home.

He was in Europe on the world tour but it never felt quite like home. He went to college and spent time in Bouldern in a more cycling-centric area. But with pro cycling days behind him now, retirement has returned him back to Bainbridge Island. He seems to have no regrets, though the path wasn’t easy. Missing out on experiences in high school and college to focus on training. Now he is gravel racing for trek and mentoring for the next generation. His career has really come full circle. Now it’s all about promoting cycling through local club rides in Seattle. The love for bikes is still there. But he’s doing it his own way. The road goes on forever and the cycling never ends.

Did I learn about cycling or about Kiel’s career highlights in this interview? Nope. I did hear a guy whose love for cycling doesn’t end when sponsors or races do. A content love for cycling and the journey is what I took away from this. Give a listen for yourself, and give us a review wherever you get your pods. We’ll see you on the next pedal. Cheers!
