What’s up Big Stick Energy Fam! Tori and Renee are back with a really cool episode this week. So cool, it’s colder than a polar bear’s toenail because we’re talking about glaciers. This week’s recap covers their interview with Caroline Aubry-Wake. She’s a PhD candidate studying the ice fields of the Canadian Rockies. We’ll learn a lot about glaciers, climate change, our wild spaces in general and of course more about Caroline. Let’s get into it!
Caroline Aubry-Wake
Being a glacier scientist isn’t all skiing, hiking, and ice climbing. Caroline shares, you do get outside, but there are multitudes more hours behind a computer analyzing data. And while her studies have taken her to some beautiful places, like the Peyto Glacier in Alberta, it wasn’t this ice’s frosty good looks that attracted her. It was the data. The Peyto Glacier is one of the longest studied glaciers and to find out where we’re going we need to analyze the past. It allows patterns to form and help us plan for what’s next!
How Bad Is It?
Over the past 60 years, it’s been the same story. Every mountain range and alpine glacier on the planet. It’s warming. Glaciers are retreating. Only now it’s happening so fast, it’s hard to keep up. These massive pieces of ice used to note change over decades and now it’s visible on a yearly basis. So ya, not great. Record heat in Canada last year caused epic glacial melt, leading to flooding from these ancient frozen reservoirs. Bigger crevasses, more rock fall. The threats seem endless and insurmountable at times. And maybe they are.
Fun Facts?
Sorry but I have to call shenanigans on the naming of this episode. I learned a lot about science. And I already knew glaciers are awesome and beautiful. But, I have to say the facts don’t seem so fun. The facts seem to point to us being fucked. But, thankfully there are smarter people than me, like Caroline Aubry-Wake, studying and looking for answers. For everyone’s sake let’s hope they find some.
